'Midnight Meat Train' Trailer

Midnight Meat Train teaser posterThose of you who know me personally are aware of how deeply my love of Clive Barker's work runs. When a well worn copy of the first Book of Blood found its way into my hands at the tender age of thirteen, I immediately devoured it and was forever changed. Much in the same way Lovecraft and Poe attacked the horror genre from their entirely unique perspectives, Barker had not only changed the rules, but literally (<--hey lookie, proper use of the term literally) rewrote the template for modern horror.

After reading the insanely sick introduction to the Books, in which a fake psychic finds himself at the mercy of an all-too-real malevolent spirit who proceeds to etch the anthology's stories onto his very flesh, literally making him the book of blood... Oh yes, I was hooked!...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

DVD Review: Felix the Cat - Golden Anniversary Edition

Felix the Cat - Golden Anniversary EditionRighteo!!!! It’s Felix the cat, the wonderful, wonderful cat.

Now I’m not 60, but I remember Felix the Cat reruns from Saturday morning cartoon time "Down Under" in Australia, back in the 80s, so I was thrilled to have a sneak preview of this DVD. For anyone like me that wants to have all of their tele-visual childhood experiences on DVD to relive at any moment, to abuse as wondrous escapes from the harshness of an adult life (am I sharing too much?), this is a great buy...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Comic Review: Jesus Hates Zombies -- Those Slack Jaw Blues TPB

Jesus Hates Zombies - Those Slack Jaw BluesJesus Hates Zombies: Those Slack-Jaw Blues TPB
Created by Stephen Lindsay
Artist: Various
Independent Horizon
Cover Price: $17; Available Now

A zombie plague has overtaken Earth, and the situation has become so dire that God feels he must step in and once again send his only son to Earth to save the souls of those that remain alive. Jesus' goal is to find a church where a group of survivors are boarded up and are the key to saving the human race. Unfortunately, there are two catches. First, God is unable to locate the specific church due to the evil clouding Earth, and so Jesus must travel the globe until he finds it. Second, since Jesus' powers on Earth are fueled by faith and belief, and with so few left alive to believe, Jesus is essentially a mortal...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

DVD Review: 1408

1408 movie poster
Haunted hotel rooms are commonplace. Google your hometown and the topic and you're bound to come up with at least one nearby. Usually the back-story involves a visitor or hotel employee who met their unfortunate end on the premises. But that's nothing compared to the Dolphin's room 1408. 1408 is the mother of all haunted hotel rooms, having claimed more than 50 "victims," and looking for more when skeptical and emotionally burnt-out writer Michael Enslin (John Cusack) checks in. Only Stephen King could concoct such a notion, though it is Swedish director Mikael Håfström who brought the story to the big screen...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Hardware Review: Apple Keyboard '08 Edition

New Apple Keyboard 2008 EditionI set out happily on my morning mission to the local Apple store with the intention of coming home with a shiny new-brushed aluminum (one of my VERY favorite aesthetics, BTW), Apple Bluetooth keyboards. Sadly, my happy thoughts of bringing home my new little friend (minus the number pad AND the forward delete button... a personal peeve of mine!) were dashed. They weren’t in stock. I went from the Apple store in the local mall to a CompUSA only to be told the same thing, though the words were slightly different. At the Apple store I inquired about the new Apple Bluetooth keyboard and I was handed a card and instructed to call in a week and "check up to see if they were delivered yet." At CompUSA, however, the resident Mac-geek informed me that they "hadn't shipped out to anyone," and "I don't know what's wrong with Apple, people have been asking quite often about that item."...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Comic Review: Amour #1

Approbation Comics Amour #1Amour: The Amour Anthology #1
Written by Bart A. Thompson
Art by Ezequiel Pineda
Letters by Brant W. Fowler
Approbation Comics
Cover Price $3.50; Available Now

The skinny on Amour, an Approbation Comics title, is that it’s a black-and-white anthology of three one-and-done storylines about dating life in our society today. Billed as a romance comic book, each story is a bite-sized chunk of early relationship stages, i.e., the really uncomfortable dating portions. The anthology format is one that caters to shorter story, limiting the overall scope of a book, generally frustrating interested readers but pulling in casual readers with easy to access stories and fresh characters. Amour is a nice balance of short-play stories generally centered around two individuals in situations that are, for the lack of a better term, called dates. The shorter stories play down Bart Thompson’s likely weakness with writing longer narratives...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Music Review: Lindsey Boullt 'Composition'

Lindsey Boullt - CompositionSo this album is huge and as it's name suggests, full of compositions. Some musicians write tunes, others write songs, but the really dedicated virtuoso types... They write compositions. This album, or this "moment of genius" as I prefer to relate to it, is just that. Fans of musicians who utterly bury themselves in their art, or to put it more bluntly, musicians wanking, need to put their seat-belts on, or some such metaphor...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Weekly Comic Book Pulls for 9-19-07

Weekly Comic Book PullsWorld War Hulk #4
This one was a bit of a let down as I've loved the first three issues, but this one didn't impress me as much. The battle between Hulk and Dr. Strange was a little hard to follow at points and some of the coloring effects were a little weird. Plus the whole fight is I'm assuming based on an old plot point from some Dr. Strange story that I've never heard of, and I'm not doing any research to figure out what's going on. That fight is the first half of the issue, with the second half being the Illuminati against each other. The fight is suitably emotional and this part I thought was well drawn. I mean to be fair it's John Romita Jr., and on a bad day he's still better than most people. All that said, still enjoying the mini, not buying any extra tie-ins and getting the whole story, so I call it a win. ---3 out of 5...come see what else Henchman21 has been reading at GEEKS OF DOOM!

Top Cow Productions
Cover price: $2.99; On-sale: Sept. 26, 2007

Since everyone has to have their own big summer event, Top Cow brings us First Born, a tale set to shake the very foundations of the Top Cow universe and make sure that nothing is ever the same!! If I sound a bit cynical, it's only because I've been around comics long enough to have seen all this before. It probably doesn't help that outside of the first few issues of The Darkness, I've never been a big reader of the Top Cow line of books. I'm sure fans of these books are anticipating this mini and probably enjoyed the first issue [see review here]. Non-fans might have less reason to pick this up, although it's not completely without merit. The event smacks of a “Me too” attitude that crashed these kinds of things in the late 90s. How many event minis did Wildstorm produce in their heyday, and how many of those does anyone actually remember as being any good? With so many things going on at Marvel and DC, it's hard to see any other companies jumping on as anything but a cash grab...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

DVD Review: Pearl Jam -- Immagine in Cornice

Pearl Jam - Immagine in CorniceIn 2006, Pearl Jam spent a week touring the Italian countryside. They put on concerts from Bologna to Pistoia, playing landmark venues such as the medieval Piazza del Duomo, and the Arena di Verona -- a roman amphitheatre built in 30 AD.

Along with them they brought famed celebrity photographer Danny Clinch to document their journey, both on and off stage. Using several different video formats including Super-8 and High Definition, Clinch expertly captures the energy and emotion of the band's live performances, as well as the intimate and quiet moments in-between.

With his unrestricted access and unique perspective, Clinch is able to put together a concert video/road documentary that I imagine plays as close to real life as you're likely to get without risking a restraining order. Immagine in Cornice, which translates from Italian as Picture in a Frame, comes across as just that -- a candid snapshot of the lives of six musicians as they rock their way through the hamlets and cities of Italy...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Movie Review: Sydney White

Sydney White movie posterIt is not fair to judge all films by the same standards. Judging a new hip-hop album by the same standard as a concert symphony would be equally pointless (though admittedly amusing to read).

So when one sits down to watch a teen comedy, a certain set of expectations are a definite order. The academy will not likely be handing out nominations for any of the work done on Sydney White, but the film's target market will find some of amusement, albeit cheap, with the movie.

The increasingly popular tread of making "modern fairy tales" continues with Amanda Bynes as the title character, a less than subtle play on Snow White. Children will chuckle and their parents will roll their eyes at the many references the film makes to the classic story...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Ronnie Wood UK Art Exhibit

I am very, very excited about Ronnie Wood's forthcoming art exhibition and have been a follower of his work for a few years now. His work is energetic, confident, and captures the world of music that has been part of his life for so many years beautifully. Intimate, poised, and although has expressionist undertones, Wood definitely carries his own style with an uncompromising grace very much missing from the world of contemporary art today. He knows that art isn't just simply an idea, that it is within your heart and isn't simply the 'shock and awe' factor, but that he really values the gift he was given.

After the jump, see the press release for the exhibition at the Richard Goodall Gallery in the UK later this year...continue reading this article at Geeks of Doom!

Movie Review: Across The Universe

Across The Universe movie posterDo I care if this movie has flaws? No. Not one bit. This movie has some flaws in it, but so does Sin City, and that is my all-time favorite. Across the Universe is not even anywhere as close as good as Sin City, but it does come very close to being one of my favorite musicals of all time. I can’t even explain what Across the Universe was trying to prove to us. Was Julie Taymor trying to prove to us that she knew her color wheel? Or was she trying to prove that there were actors out there that could actually act? Or was she trying to prove to us that maybe, just maybe, Across the Universe was trying to prove us something that no other movie really has shown us. For the first time in years, a film hit me right in the gut, and told me to pay attention to what it was trying to tell me. And tonight, I bring you, the hardest review I ever had to write, Across the Universe...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Movie Review: Good Luck Chuck

Good Luck Chuck movie posterI said I wanted to upgrade the finger and so from now on people should use both the ring finger coupled with the middle finger. I called it the SUperFInger. -Revelation 4:2

I hate Dane Cook. It’s no secret, really. But like many of my pop culture enemies, I once rooted for him to do good so I could look at him differently and… Ya know… Learn something. I watched his HBO special, which looked to me like a red-assed howler monkey with a metrosexual haircut shrieking at the top of his lungs, telling long and unfunny stories that didn’t have a point and didn’t really go anywhere. I saw Employee of the Month… And soaked my eyes in bleach immediately afterwards. But that was just a bad movie. I heard good things about Mr. Brooks, so I went into Good Luck Chuck with an open mind, waiting to be convinced of the MySpace comic phenomenon...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

DVD Review: 30 Rock -- Season 1

30 RockI love Liz Lemon! Physically!

I disliked her on Saturday Night Live, where she won an Emmy for writing before becoming one of the cast, but I love Tina Fey's alter ego Liz Lemon, who is head honcho of her own late night sitcom show on NBC's 30 Rock.

30 Rock -- which won the Emmy this year for Best Comedy -- is a comedy that revolves around Liz Lemon who heads the whacky crew of a Saturday Night Live-type of show. The hysterical characters are played perfectly by this all-star cast. Jane Krakowski plays Jenna Maroney, the lead of The Girlie Show, until Alec Baldwin's character, Jack Donaghy, decides to draft ex-movie star Tracy Jordan, played by Tracy Morgan, to rejuvenate the show with his, literally, crazy antics. Liz has to learn to manage these and all the other cast members, including the writers and an NBC page, played by Jack McBrayer, under Jack's wing. Kenneth the page is a standout character. He is played masterfully by McBrayer. Alec Baldwin is brilliant as Donaghy. A television performance like this is pure perfection and a joy to watch. Tracy Morgan and Jane Krakowski are great also, along with guest stars such as Isabella Rossellini, Nathan lane, Will Arnett, and Paul Reubens...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Movie Review: In the Valley of Elah

The Valley of Elah movie posterEvery so often, a movie earns the title of "Film." In the Valley of Elah is that film. Powerful and touching writing, exceptional acting, particular visuals, and marvelous direction make In the Valley of Elah a film of timeless quality.

Retired Sergeant Hank Deerfield (Tommy Lee Jones) gets a phone call saying his son is absent without leave. Unable to accept that his son would abandon his duties as a soldier, he leaves his wife Joan (Susan Sarandon), and he drives to his son’s base to investigate his son’s disappearance. When he doesn’t get the response he wants from the military police, he sets off to contact the civilians. The civilians aren’t any more helpful. They tell him that he must contact the army police because they are in charge of their people, they wouldn’t investigate his disappearance. A jurisdictional nightmare, the only people who seem actively investigating the case is Hank Deerfield and Detective Emily Sanders (Charlize Theron) follows behind in tow. The investigation is a fight with the army, a troubling examination of willful incompetence and tragic truths...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

TV Review: Curb Your Enthusiasm -- Meet the Blacks

Curb Your EnthusiasmHey, I may loathe myself, but it has nothing to do with the fact that I'm Jewish. -- Larry David, Curb Your Enthusiasm

Earlier this Saturday, I went to visit my grandparents up north. And then they took me somewhere, some place that I never want to go back to again. We went to my mom’s aunt’s house, where they were hosting a memorial lunch for someone who died in my mom’s family about ten months ago. The one thing that came to my mind was how Larry David from Curb Your Enthusiasm would fuck up something at an event just like this. So later that night, I turned on HBO and guess what my hazel eyes see on the damn TV screen? The Curb Your Enthusiasm season six premiere in friggen shining lights (at least through my eyes). Now here is what not many people know: I LIVE off of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Whenever it’s on and I’m bored, I turn it on and I sit there and laugh my tiny testes off at Larry and his damn antics. You really got to give it to the guy. Even when you are in the crappiest of moods, he gives you something to laugh at in each episode. In one way, his character is a Michael Scott (from The Office) without being in business, and in the other, he’s just Jerry Seinfeld. It’s about time we had two characters from two of the best damn sitcoms come together and form one big character. Larry David’s character is the best one that you can think of (or can't think of). If it slipped under my radar until the day it aired again, I’m sure it could slip under yours...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Movie Review: Highlander: The Source

Highlander: The SourceThe Highlander franchise has a long and checkered history. It began with the original film, which had three things going for it: an intriguing premise about immortals living among ordinary humans, a decent cast, and a music score (in part) by Queen. Though flawed, its mix of history, mysticism, and romance made up for any shortcomings and established why fans of the franchise still want to see more of the story today. A second film, Highlander II, threw most of that away with an utterly ridiculous plot that attempted an origin story. It was so bad that it is still largely ignored by producers and fans alike...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

TV Preview: Bionic Woman (2007) Pilot

Michelle RyanAre the Sci Fi Channel and its parent company NBC-Universal trying to drive me insane with its lack of logic? It cuts off Battlestar Galactica, moves it around on the schedule, and basically does anything to ruin the only good show on the Sci Fi schedule. They fill the schedule with mostly crap (have you seen the new Flash Gordon without rolling your eyes?) Then, NBC goes and poaches the concept (harsh new take on an 80's classic) along with a few of the actors from BSG, and does a fairly mediocre new show in the form of the revisioned Bionic Woman. And of course, we sci-fi genre fans eat it up because, what else is there? This is not to say that the new show is patently bad, it has several good points and several bad points. It’s just another mediocre show, at least from the pilot, and I was hoping for something better...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Manga is an entirely different art form than the western comics I’m used to reading, requiring alternative modes of visual interpretation. Luckily, Witchblade Takeru Manga Vol. 8 gives readers -- new to the series and manga itself -- plenty of time to acclimate.

One of the most striking aspects of the book (written by Yasuko Kobayashi with artwork by Kazasa Sumita), in relative connection to what I typically see as manga style, is the dynamic vibrancy the book maintains throughout the issue -- from character rendering to the full-color displays utilized from page to page...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

DVD Review: Dragon Heat

Dragon HeatWhen Panther Duen is apprehended and brought to justice, an international team of special agents are brought to Hong Kong to testify against him. During his transport to trial, Panther's police caravan is attacked, and in a military-style ambush, Panther is taken away. While at first it is thought that it was his triad who saved him, it becomes clear after inspecting the attack style and the aftermath in the criminal underground that Panther has been abducted instead. The agents that were only brought in to testify have now teamed up and storm the streets to figure out who is behind the brutal attacks. Commander Hon (Simon Yam) offers all the police back up he can, while Kong Long (Sammo Hung), who has been demoted to transportation supervisor, offers the team advice on what they are going up against. Movie Review: Mr. Woodcock

Mr. Woodcock movie posterWell, I am known for my meat. -- Jasper Woodcock in Mr. Woodcock

6th grade. Third period gym. Coach Stange.

Everybody knew all you had to do was show up and dress for class and you’d get an easy A; so that I did. Yet at the end of the first semester I had to explain to my folks why I got a C- in gym class. I argued over and over that Coach Stange flat out hated my guts. Mom even went so far as to call the school to find out. Why the low grade for a whole semester? According to him, it was because I forgot my gym clothes one time and I needed to be taught some discipline. It took her until the next year of seeing A’s in gym for her to finally believe me that he did actually hate me. I didn’t let my distaste for him ruin or guide my life, but God, I hated that guy. Mr. Woodcock tells a similar, albeit slightly more colorful version of that same story...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Film Maniac's Fall 2007 Film Fears

Film Maniac's Fall 2007 Film FearsAh, it’s that time of year again. Every year, there is that one season where things start to look up. This time of year is all about the awards. Voters for the Academy, Golden Globes, and MTV will be looking at all of these films that are released this year, and they will keep the films released around this time in mind.

Will this year be better than last year? Last year, we had Scorsese, Nolan, Cuaron, del Toro, Frears, Condon, Eastwood, Inarritu, Almodovar, Gibson, Zwick, Soderbergh, Field, and De Palma. This year, our line-up includes Taymor, Cronenberg, Lee, PTA, the Coen brothers, Baumbach, Scott, Farrelly brothers, Haggis, Mangold, Jordan, Penn, Anderson, and Forster. You decide which year is better.

In Part I of my two-part series, "The Rest of 2007 Movies – The Good, The Bad, and the Very F**king Ugly," I showed you the movies that I am looking forward to. This time, however, are the ones that I don’t want to see, or the ones that look horrible. You will see me be a nasty bastard again, however, this won’t contain as many fucks as “Nil by Mouth” did or as many ass eaters as “Georgia Rule” had. Approbation Comics

Anthology comics are few and far between, and are always tricky to market to the masses, especially when you are dealing with a title with not just multiple short stories, but multiple titles and storylines that are entities unto themselves under that anthology umbrella. The choice to make it as homogeneous as possible to target a specific audience (think Marvel Comics Presents), or to make it a diverse compilation that will force readers out of their comfort zone and expose them to new genres and storytelling is always difficult. Approbation Comics, with their Myriad line, decides to take a huge gamble by bringing together five titles that couldn’t possibly be more different under the same umbrella, with each title getting approximately eight pages per book. Does the gamble pay off?...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Movie Review: 3:10 To Yuma

3:10 To Yuma movie posterEvery director should make at least one Western. It’s as simple as that. I don’t care if they’re in vogue or out, whether they make money or not. If you hope to be worth a damn behind the camera, you need one Western under your belt. Landscapes, violence, sweat, grit, faces with evil intentions or grimy fear, moral peril. It encourages you to use every last damn bit of your frame and start seeing things from an ethical perspective, as opposed to just moving your characters around a stale plot like so many chess pieces. If you can make one, you can make any other kind of movie you set your brain on. There is more than one reason to mourn the latter-day death of the Western. Guys like Sergio Leone were the last guys who thought big and didn’t crop and truncate their images for that all too lucrative home video market.

James Mangold is now officially worth a damn. I won’t bestow Grand Master privileges on him just quite yet, because he did after all inflict Kate & Leopold on us. But 3:10 To Yuma finds Mangold at his best and most composed. This is a film that takes its time, lets us get to know the people and the situation, and only reveals to us what the movie is REALLY about in the last half hour...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

The Great Zombie Round-Up… The Final Chapter?

Hordes of Hellish and Vile Things,

The time has come once again for your good friend Obvious Zombie (<-- me) to take your hand and lead you through the Zombie Zeitgeist. We must move quickly, for there is a lot to cover --movies, science, flash mobs, comics... What, I can't have your hand? I'll give it back when I'm done with it. I swear.

How about a thigh?...

USDZA SealObZomb Makes Friends, Enemies

I feel it's my duty to bring a newly formed governmental agency to your attention. The U.S. Department of Zombie Affairs, or USDZA (affectionately pronounced Us Does), has been quietly recruiting unassuming police cadets, top-of-the-class boot camp soldiers, and first-year sanitation employees to round out their sub-management and fill their rank and file.

Doesn't seem like they're assembling an outreach team, huh?

'Permissum somnus subsisto quietus' ...anyone know what that means?

Anyhoo, I don't know much else about them, save the fact that since I myself AM a zombie (one with his own blog no less), you will doubtless find me crossing paths with their agents in very the near future...continue reading this frakin' AWESOME Zombie Round-Up at Geeks of Doom!

Movie Review: The Brave One

The Brave One movie posterPleased to meet you, hope you guess my name. But what’s puzzling you, is the nature of my game. -- The Rolling Stones, "Sympathy for the Devil"

Erica Bain (Jodie Foster) and her fiancé David (Naveen Andrews) are like two peas in a pod. She does a show on a New York talk radio station and he is a doctor. They are blissfully in love and planning their wedding. They fake-cute argue over things like invitations and what type of wedding they should have. On a walk through Central Park one night with their dog, they are brutally attacked. She is beaten within an inch of her life, and him six inches further. She wakes from her coma three weeks later to find that David’s funeral has already been held and she is left with nothing to do but pick up the pieces and try to move on.

Going into this movie seemed like dangerous ground to tread so soon after seeing Death Sentence just two weeks ago. Another movie about an average Joe turned vigilante killer after the death of their (blank)? And even if there will always be a spot reserved in my movie loving heart for her because of Silence of the Lambs, Foster kind of fell off the map for me some time ago. This movie surprised the hell out of me...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Movie Review: Eastern Promises

Eastern PromisesEastern Promises gives us a glimpse into Russian organized crime in London and what happens when an innocent person gets wrapped up in its seedy existence. Amazing visuals and beautiful acting make Eastern Promises worth seeing.

Anna Khitrova (Naomi Watts) is a midwife in the maternity ward in a London hospital. A young pregnant Russian woman who speaks no English is brought into the hospital and delivers her baby before dying. Anna makes it her personal mission to find the family of the child, no matter where it takes her. Her first and only clue to the mother’s identity is her diary, written in Russian. Anna first brings the diary to her uncle, who is so disgusted by the content, he refuses to translate the contents for her. Discouraged but not giving up, she brings the diary to a local Russian restaurant. Semyon, the owner, agrees to translate the diary for her. Anna doesn’t know that he is the head of the local Russian mob. When she leaves the restaurant she meets Nikolai Luzhin (Viggo Mortensen), the cleaner for the mob. When they realize what is in the diary, Anna, her uncle, her aunt, and the baby aren’t safe...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Music Geeks Beware of Downloads

The Internet has been a boon for music geeks. I do have fond memories of scouring the LP stacks at my favorite independent record store, but for instant gratification the Internet is the prime way to buy music. Where else can you find someone to express mail you a copy of Dave Clark Five CDs released in Italy? Do you really want to hear that Alcatrazz album that someone mentioned in a blog post? Pop onto iTunes and give the songs a sample before plunking down money for it.

But I must tell you for those who use Napster, iTunes, eMusic, or other Internet downloading sites -- buyer beware! There are rip-offs afoot...continue reading this article at Geeks of Doom!

Fractured Hope: A Short Poem

Fractured Hope
A Short Poem

By Elisabetta Jane Maria Allen

Coldness is insecurity enveloped in a state of uncertainty
In your heart there is knowing
knowing of a tomorrow that will never begin
Twisted in a time of technological domination
you seek to break free
From the harsh times of a fractured globe
manifested by a bastard that is humanity
For all the animal kingdom's innocence
a day will prevail
When once again they will walk our planet's terrain
and reclaim their home
