Movie Review: Things We Lost In the Fire

Things We Lost In The FireThings We Lost In the Fire
Directed by Susanne Bier
Starring Halle Berry, Benicio Del Toro
Rated R

Things We Lost in the Fire shows us that life is not fair, bad things happen to good people, good people aren’t always good, and bad people aren’t always as bad as we think. Even though most of the performances are good, Things We Lost in the Fire felt unnatural and at times, even trite.

Alone, without her now deceased husband Steven (David Duchovny), Audry (Halle Berry) has to begin to rebuild her and her children’s lives. She remembers, at the last minute, Steven’s drug-addicted friend Jerry (Benicio Del Toro) had yet to be invited to the funeral. After the funeral and after some soul searching, Audry decides to invite Jerry to live in her garage...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Movie Review: Saw IV

Saw IV movie posterSaw IV
Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman
Starring Tobin Bell, Lyriq Bent
Rated R

Walking out of the latest sour headache of a Saw movie, I was consumed by a single question: Why are people going to see these movies? They’re cynical, depressing, and not that whole “fun” thing one would associate with Halloween. Now I’m not gonna say a couple of them aren’t decent, but they use up the same tricks over and over again and thrive on shallow, rusty shit. So why do people want to hurt the horror genre to the extent that they’re willing to shell over their ticket money every final weekend in October like clockwork? In three days, Saw IV made more money than the infinitely superior 30 Days of Night did in nine days. So with all the bellyaching I hear about how these movies suck, why do people still go?

Why do they hate America?...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Pumpkin O' Doom '07

The Empress and I picked out our Halloween pumpkin last weekend, and I've spent a lot of the time since trying to decide how I was going to carve it up. I was nearing the end of my creative rope when, serendipitously, Dr. Geek, Ph.D sent me this awesome link from studenthacks.org of geeky pumpkin carving designs yesterday afternoon. Check out the Death Star pumpkin -- it totally blew me way!

Anyhoo, taking a cue from that one and the Yod-a-lantern, the Empress suggested that this year’s Official GoD Halloween pumpkin should be based on Darth Vader. Therefore …continue reading this article at Geeks of Doom!

Movie Review: Elizabeth: The Golden Age

Elizabeth: The Golden Age movie posterElizabeth: The Golden Age
Directed by Shekhar Kapur
Starring Cate Blanchett, Clive Owen, Geoffrey Rush
Rated PG-13

It's 1585 and Queen Elizabeth I has occupied the English throne for 27 years, but traitors within her country as well as international political rivals continue to threaten her position. King Philip II of Spain, a religious zealot, is hellbent on returning England and its Protestant Queen to Catholicism, even if it means all-out war. Plotting with the Spanish King to usurp Elizabeth's crown is the Queen's own cousin, Mary Stuart the Queen of Scots, under house arrest in England. Meanwhile, back in the Queen's court, Elizabeth's advisers continue to pressure her into choosing a suitable husband. But when the explorer Walter Raleigh returns to England, his tales of the New World and its enticing exports (not to mention his charming good looks) divide the Queen's attentions, making her vulnerable.

But make no mistake, Queen Elizabeth still is a force to be reckoned with...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

The Hellraiser Project

The Hellraiser ProjectTo make a long story short…

I reviewed the twentieth anniversary DVD of Hellraiser for Fatally-Yours.com because, well, it’s been twenty years and I hadn’t seen the Goddamn thing. I didn’t like it and, as I am wont to do, said so, and quite loudly.

The response in a circle or two was not kind, calling me “delusional” and claiming that I “didn’t get it.” This was so entertaining that I reviewed the second one, Hellhound: Hellraiser II, with largely similar results. People I didn’t talk to a whole lot started leaving me messages and some dude who knows the WRITER of the second one left a comment on my MySpace blog, it’s all just fuckin’ weird. I just wanted to review ONE movie, and I got sucked into a world of horrible dialogue and S & M posing.

One of those attentive readers was Dave, one of my editor at Geeks of Doom, who is also a die hard Clive Barker fan. He wanted me to tear something he calls Hellraiser IV: Pins In Space a new asshole. I told him I couldn’t do this without seeing the third one, to which he consented to post on GoD.

Being as I’m in for penny after penny at this point (and there being a remake on the horizon), I might as well be in for the whole pound. Which is why, in partnership with both Fatally-Yours and Geeks of Doom, I am both pleased and sickened to announce The Hellraiser Project. Why stop at just reviewing the four that went to theaters, when I can do the ones that went to video as well? I’ll be switching back and forth from site to site, leaving my depressed little movie droppings when it comes to this franchise...continue reading this apparent assault on Dr. Royce's sanity at Geeks of Doom!

Dan in Real Life movie posterDan in Real Life
Directed by Peter Hedges
Starring Steve Carell, Juliette Binoche, Dane Cook
Rated PG-13
Touchstone Pictures

It’s funny how differently things hit you on different days. Depending on the day or week you are having, a movie can either sit well with you or sit like a ton of bricks. I wasn’t really expecting too much from this film, but I guess a funny thing happened on the way to the forum…

Dan in Real Life is about single dad and popular family advice columnist Dan Burns (Steve Carell). He is doing his best to raise his three daughters; two teenagers and one almost there. They set out on a weekend away for an annual family get-together. The first morning, Dan goes into town and meets a woman, Marie (Juliette Binoche) at a bookstore. We soon find out that Marie happens to be the girlfriend of Dan’s brother Mitch (Dane Cook), who was using the weekend as an outlet to let her meet the fam. The rest of the weekend is spent watching Dan and Marie share secret laughs and quick snippet meetings in this mansion of a house unbeknownst to the rest of the family, especially Mitch...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Las Vegas Season 4 DVDLas Vegas Season 4

Say the words "Las Vegas" and many images come to mind. Bright lights. Beautiful people. Larger than life entertainment. A place outside ordinary reality, where anything can and sometimes does, happen. The NBC drama of the same name taps into all of this with a mix of attractive cast members, outrageous guest performances, and over-the-top plot lines. More guilty pleasure than exquisite confection, the TV show Las Vegas nonetheless delivers a gratifying sense of energy and excitement. It is junk food television, but the kind that keeps you wanting a little more... maybe not tomorrow, but certainly by the time the next episode rolls around...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

I feel kinda bad...

See, before having the opportunity to review this book, I’d never heard of Cory Doctorow. For those of you not in the know, Cory Doctorow is a Canadian-born science-fiction author and all-around busy-little-Internet-bee. He seems to juggle a million different projects at once, has written a number of books, all of which can be bought in stores or downloaded for *FREE* from his website, and he wears the title of “Blogger” with the same dignity and authority as “Author.” Quite an interesting fellow, even from an initial outsider’s perspective...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Eleven Questions with T.E. Pouncey: Paul O'Connell

(Because 10 isn't enough --- and who has time to read 12?)

The Sound of DrowningThe word "genius" is used so often that it's lost all impact.

However British comic writer Paul O'Connell is nothing less than a comic book genius. Creator of the The Sound of Drowning series of comic stories, his work has been called "a devastatingly funny, misanthropic and strangely beautiful carnival of delights" by 3 a.m., Magazine. Mark Stafford at The London Cartoon Museum has said of O'Connell's work: "Paul O'Connell's Sound of Drowning strips are my favourite Brit finds of recent years. He has a knack for nailing a specific kind of urban unease, for detailing the fantasy lives of the impotent, and our disquiet at the gulf between our shiny expectations and the shabby reality around us. Highly recommended and bloody funny too."

O'Connell said some of his comic book favorites have been American superhero comics, Mad Magazine, the legendary U.K. Science fiction comic 2000 AD, and the European editions of Heavy Metal.

T.E. Pouncey: Your biography of Charlie Parker was one of the best I've ever seen presented in any medium. What interested you to write about him?...continue reading this AWESOME interview at Geeks of Doom!

Conversations with GoD: 'Shreds' Mastermind Santeri "StSanders" Ojala

StSandersSHRED. Officially referring to the ripping apart of something. Unofficially referring to a rock guitarist's best solos. Now, a cunning mix of both known as Shreds has arrived thanks to StSanders.

Finnish artist Santeri Ojala, aka StSanders, takes classic rock shredding footage and cunningly overdubs it with, well, anything but classic guitar work. Cleverly matching the fingerwork and some other on-stage antics, at first it's tough to call it, til you realize just how utterly awful the solo is. StSanders has gone and put these Shreds through the shredder. (Check out our favorites: Jake E. Lee with Ozzy Osbourne and Eddie Van Halen.)

So, I decided to ask him some stupid questions...continue reading this AWESOME interview at Geeks of Doom!

I’ve never read a G.I. Joe comic.

I’d be lying if I said I was ever really interested in one. I used to love the cartoon, for sure. I grew up on it! Snake-Eyes was my favorite (wasn’t he everybody’s?), but I was still shocked and saddened when it looked like they had killed off team-leader Duke in the animated movie. Many adults would say that the show was just a half-hour-long commercial for the action figures (not dolls... Action Figures), but I wasn’t hearing it. The ‘Joes adventures were real to me... they were my adventures! They taught me that knowing was half the battle!

Still... almost twenty (shudddder) years later, I just couldn’t quite bring myself to look at the comics. Maybe I was afraid it wouldn’t live up to my memories? Maybe I was just afraid to get involved in such a potentially lengthy bit of continuity.

Whatever the reason, I’m now starting to think... maybe I was wrong...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Weekly Comic Book Pulls for 10-17-07

Weekly Comic Book PullsMighty Avengers #5
Woo, it’s finally out. And I’d say it was worth the wait. Frank Cho draws a tremendous beat down between femme-Ultron and the Sentry, while the rest of the team works on a plan to stop her, and she works to launch the United States nuclear weapons. Brian Michael Bendis does a great job with the characters in this issue. Ares in particular gets his issue to shine. I also think the Bendis reached a good amount of the thought bubbles, as I’ve found them too numerous to the point of distraction in previous issues, but he made good use of them here. I only hope that issue 6 doesn’t take as long to come out. But I’m not holding my breath. ---4 out of 5...come see what else Henchman21 has been reading at GEEKS OF DOOM!

Sometimes things happen that are out of your control and those are the times you have to stand up and be a man. -- Dwight Arno from Reservation Road

Prolonged Reckonings (NOTE: Spoilers!!!)

One evening, in a horrific second, the lives of the Learner family are changed forever. Their son, Josh Learner (Sean Curley), is killed by a hit and run driver outside a gas station on Reservation Road. The family has just come from a music recital where Josh has played the cello beautifully -- an incredibly gifted musician. They stop at a gas station. While his parents, Ethan (Joaquin Phoenix) and Grace (Jennifer Connelly) and his sister Emma (Elle Fanning) go inside the station, he remains outside to release fireflies from a jar. Meanwhile, Dwight Arno (Mark Ruffalo) and his son, Lucas (Eddie Alderson) are coming home from a Boston Red Sox game. They had a great day at the game. Lucas is exhausted from the excitement of the game. Dwight is cruising along; and he is distracted by his cell phone. His son is sleeping on the passenger side. In a matter of seconds, he swerves to avoid another car, but in doing so he hits Josh. Dwight knows he has hit and possibly killed the boy, but he panics and keeps driving. The Learner family has lost their son. Ethan has witnessed the accident, but all he knows is that a black SUV is responsible for taking his son away from him. Dwight tells Lucas that they hit a log. Interview: Autumn Reeser

Autumn ReeserIn ABC Family’s new original movie Nature of the Beast, actress Autumn Reeser plays Julia, who finds out her fiance Rich (Til Death's Eddie Kaye Thomas) is actually a werewolf. But that won't stop Julia from getting hitched! Instead of ditching her man, she's on a mission to help him find a cure.

During an interview session with Autumn Reeser, Geeks of Doom got to ask the actress a few questions about her role in Nature of the Beast.

Nature of the Beast premiers tonight at 8 PM ET/PT on ABC Family and will run several times during the network's 13 Nights of Halloween event (see Geeks of Doom's 13 Nights of Halloween contest to win posters and werewolf teeth!)

Geeks of Doom: Your character Julia falls in love with and gets engaged to Rich, who turns out to be a werewolf, yet the wedding's still on. Why is Julia so determined to marry Rich?

Autumn Reeser: She really loves her fiance! It's a metaphor for all of the big and little realities that come to light when you have decided to spend the rest of your life with someone. There's suddenly no more hiding b/c there is someone who will be in your life 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year after year after year... Julia really believes in marriage and understands what it takes to make it work. It's always work and there is always a problem to be overcome, so I feel like in some ways, the movie is a love-letter to marriage and the energy it takes to have a successful relationship.

GoD: What are some of the ways in which Julia tries to help Rich with his situation?...continue reading this AWESOME interview at Geeks of Doom!

If the wolves come out of the walls, then it's all over. -- Lucy's family in The Wolves In The Walls storybook

The musical for The Wolves in the Walls is based on a great children's storybook written by my favorite author Neil Gaiman.

The story is about a young girl named Lucy who hears noises coming from the walls in her house and discovers that there are wolves living inside of them. As most stories like this go, when Lucy tries to tell her family, they don't believe her. After a while, her family begins hearing the noises in the walls too. They tell her that it must be bats, rats, and mice, because if it IS wolves in the walls, and they come out, then "it's all over." Well, it wouldn't be much of a story if the wolves didn't eventually come out of the walls, now would it?...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Eleven Questions with T.E. Pouncey: Stephen Lindsay

Jesus Hates Zombies-Many faces of JC compilationStephen Lindsay is the creator and author of a self-published comic book Jesus Hates Zombies: Those Slack Jawed Blues [check out the GoD review here]. This week it was announced that Alterna Comics will be publishing the next printing of the trade with an exclusive cover by Michael Bracco this December! Lindsay has also written a JHZ story scheduled to appear in the Alterna Tales #2 anthology, due to be released this month [read the GoD review here].

Stephen Lindsay is a 30-year-old married father of two. He lives in Rochester, NY and works as an Art Director for a small marketing firm.

"I've really always been interested in comics, typically gravitating more toward the darker, edgier stuff," Stephen said. "Growing up, my favorite comic stories were both penned by Frank Miller (although I didn't realize it at the time). These were The Dark Night Returns and Daredevil: Born Again. Then I moved away from comics and didn't get into them again until recently, when I found Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead." Stephen is just beginning his professional career in comics, "But as long as I can tell stories that find their way in front of people, and some people dig them, then I'm happy." he said.

When we last left the show, Charlie (Charlie Day), Mac (Rob McElhenney), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Sweet Dee (Kaitlin Olson), and Frank (Danny DeVito), or The Gang, were knuckle deep in varying levels of chicanery. No one gave a damn about anybody else (including each other), everyone was only looking out for themselves, and to hell with the consequences or anyone who got in the way of their harebrained schemes. Since then, not much has changed. Except maybe that they are now elbow deep in the same pile they had create for themselves. Dennis has, incredibly, found a way to increase the level of his own vanity to an almost criminal level. And most times as a result, Sweet Dee's self esteem couldn't be any lower (see what she does in "The Gang Solves the North Korean Situation" for a rival bar's microbrew recipe.) Weekly Comic Book Pulls for 10-10-07

Weekly Comic Book PullsAtomic Robo #1
This is one book I’ve really been looking forward to, as I’m a big fan of writer Brian Clevinger’s webcomic “8-bit Theater.” The series is about a robot created by Nikola Tesla in 1923, which goes on to have a series of adventures across time. This issue, he fights a German scientist who is performing illegal experiments. I have to say though that it didn’t really work for me. There are some good ideas here, but a lot of the humor fell flat. There’s also some storytelling issues as there are a number of panels that are unnecessary and break the pacing of the story. The art looks very good though. Artist Scott Wegener has a style that’s one part Mike Avon Oeming and one part Mike Mignola. I really enjoyed the look of the book and the designs for the characters, but again there’s just a bit of work to be done on the storytelling. As this is the first comic work I’ve seen from both of them, I’ll continue to pick up the series, but I’d like to see a bit of improvement. ---2 out of 5...come see what else Henchman21 has been reading at GEEKS OF DOOM!

Comic Review: Birth TPB and Novo #1-3

Alterna Comics - Birth Trade PaperbackBirth TPB and Novo #1-3
Written and Created by Michael S. Bracco
Alterna Comics
Birth: Cover price: $8.00; Available Now
Novo: #1-3, Cover price: $3.00; Available Now

Hot alien sex, cool monsters, wild alien technology, huge, bloody war scenes, a progeny, and a world's fight for survival.

You had me at hot alien sex.

One world. Two species. A planet divided. Will they destroy one another or work together to solve their mutual problem? Michael S. Bracco starts his epic with the graphic novel Birth. Alterna Comics then publishes issues 1-3 following the journey of the offspring Novo.

Although it's 88 pages Birth is a swift, smooth read. Take your time and take it all in though because Bracco chronicles the story of a world that has come to its penultimate epoch, thus creating its one chance for salvation, Novo. In it there are whole pages devoted to small single panels that not only show the passage of time and space, but also evoke emotion. Bracco's backgrounds seem especially influenced by manga and they have a very alive, flowing feel. The art seems more etched than drawn. The covers for both Birth and all the Novo issues are in color, however the interiors are all black and white. Whether it is natural or conformed, Bracco's style is perfect for the black and white medium. The waterfront battle scene is very graphic, but the black and white format absorbs some of the horror...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Comic Review: Madame Mirage #3

Top Cow - Madame Mirage #3Madame Mirage #3
Written by Paul Dini
Art by Kenneth Rocafort
Colors by Imaginary Friends Studios
Letters by Troy Peteri
Top Cow Productions
Cover price: $2.99; On-sale date: Oct. 2007

Madame Mirage is a Paul Dini book.

You can see it in the retro visual design; the way his characters all look like they were plucked out of a painted movie poster from the 1930s, yet somehow manage to blend into a semi-futuristic modern setting without raising an eyebrow. You can see it in the well-paced episodic nature; the way each self-contained story manages to answer questions raised in the previous issue, all the while birthing brand new ones to ponder until next month. And you can most definitely see it the personality of the titular (pun?) femme fatale who, I swear, at times has the voice of Adrienne Barbeau's Catwoman resonating in my head. I recognize Dini's writing...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Game Review: Dynasty Warriors: Gundam

Dynasty Warriors: GundamDynasty Warriors: Gundam
Genre: Action Adventure
ESRB Rating: Rated T
Developer: Namco Bandei / Koei
Platforms: Xbox 360, Playstation 3
Price: $59.99; Released: August 28, 2007

It’s unfortunate that many video games based on anime that reach the U.S. are generally crap. It seems that everywhere around the world licensed games are decent at best. Fortunately, here comes a game that has the best combo of two products since peanut butter got in my chocolate, Dynasty Warriors: Gundam.

If you’ve ever played a Dynasty Warriors game before, this isn’t much different. You fight wave after wave of generic enemies whose job it is to stand around and get killed while occasionally shooting at you. Then, about two or three times a level you’ll fight a boss who actually fights you and usually beats the crap out of you if you don’t have help from other NPC’s. To call it repetitive is a bit of an understatement, but if you just want to play for a few hours and button mash, it makes for a good time...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Send me to jail. I'm not guilty, but I'm used to it. -- Vin Diesel, Find Me Guilty

Think back to the summer of 1995, when The Usual Suspects was released into theaters. All of you bastards were up in the sky with that movie, saying "Holy shit! This is freaking brilliant!" and "I never saw that twist coming," and I bet one of you bastards even said "FUCK THIS STUPID SHIT! In four years, a man by the name of M. Night Shyamalan would make a better twist than you little fuckers! Just wait and see, pricks!"

Well, it just happens to be that Michael Clayton IS...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Movie Review: We Own The Night

We Own The Night movie posterWe Own The Night
Directed by James Gray
Starring Mark Wahlberg, Joaquin Phoenix, Robert Duvall
Rated R

We Own The Night: Brooklyn Darkness

What are you doing? Nice college boy. Doesn't wanna get mixed up in the family business. You think this is a battle field where you shoot someone a mile away? No, you get a 45' shoot them up close and bada bing blood all over your nice ivy league suit. You're taking this awfully personal. Tom this is business and this kid's taking this very personal. -- Sonny Corleone, The Godfather

James Gray has made only three films in thirteen years. Like John Dahl, he has a mastery and firm understanding of the crime drama. We Own The Night may not be in the same league as Little Odessa or The Yards, but give it time to sink in. I was not blown away by We Own The Night. Seven years ago, I felt the same way about The Yards, but it grew on me over the years. I have a feeling the same will be true with We Own The Night. The first thing that stands out in this film is the cinematography. If I didn't know any better, I would have sworn this film was shot by Gordon Willis, the veteran cinematographer of the Godfather films, The Parallax View, All The President’s Men, and many other classics. The film’s cinematographer, Joaquin Baca-Asay, creates a vivid world of varying degrees of darkness -- one cannot help but think of certain scenes from The Godfather. The film may take place in the Brooklyn of the late Eighties, but it has a definite Seventies-style darkness to it. It is very refreshing. Wojcech Kilar’s haunting and brooding score only heightens the dark moods. His music works very well here as it did in Roman Polanski’s The Ninth Gate and Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Devil's Due Publishing
Cover price: $3.50; On-sale: Oct. 10, 2007

I’m not gonna tell you what happens in this comic. So let’s get that straight right away. I’m not going to cite specific story elements, I’m not going to reveal specific plot details. All you’re getting from me is this:

In issue #2 of Devil’s Due Publishing’s breakout series, Drafted, the story continues. The world reacts to the events of last issue, and mysteries begin to reveal themselves.

That’s it. That’s all you’re getting. Because to say more than that -- to form even a paragraph-long generalization of the plot of the book would reveal, in my eyes, too much. Every scene, every exchange, every panel... is important...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Tim Burton's 3-D 'Nightmare' and 'Vincent' in theaters Friday

NBC 3-DTickets for Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas in Disney Digital 3-D, which opens in select theaters nationwide on October 19, 2007, are on sale now.

Tickets for the movie's limited 3-week 2007 theater run are available now at www.Nightmare3Dmovie.com (which redirects to Fandango).

Opening the film will be Vincent, one of Burton’s earliest animated shorts, which was converted to a stereoscopic 3-D form for theater viewings. Made in 1982, the six-minute stop-motion short is about a boy named Vincent who imagines he’s like Vincent Price. Price narrated the black-and-white film, which was based on a poem by Burton...continue reading this article at Geeks of Doom!
