DVD Review: The Tudors -- The Complete First Season

The Tudors - The Complete First Season DVDThe Tudors
The Complete First Season
Starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Sam Neill, Jeremy Northam

Available Jan. 1, 2008

This 10-episode dramatic series takes a look at the early reign of a young Henry VIII, the 16th century Tudor King of England. Jonathan Rhys Meyers stars as King Henry, who plans to declare war on the French after they murder his uncle. The self-serving conniving Cardinal Thomas Wolsey (Sam Neill), who has a mistress and dreams of grandeur, believes that instead of waging war, Henry should propose a peace treaty the King of France. Henry's friend and trusted advisor Sir Thomas More (Jeremy Northam), author of Utopia, agrees with the peace treaty proposition, which convinces Henry to enact that plan...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Talk about shooting your load. -- Clive Owen, Shoot ’Em Up

NOTE: I’ve been obligated to write this review since the middle of August. Due to Shoot ‘Em Up being rated R, and being that I’m underage, and being that it was playing at a theater that I couldn’t sneak into, I missed one hell of a time. So… umm… sorry Dave and Eve…

There comes a time in all of our lives when we see something that doesn’t look the least bit realistic. This year alone, I had the opportunity to watch Bruce Willis ride on a fighter plane, a stripper with a gun for a leg kill zombies, and Britney Spears performing at the VMAs once again, and I didn't believe a single bit of it. Nonetheless, I enjoyed myself. I had fun with each and every one of them, and I was in one hell of a mood that could have turned a drunk sober...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Rumor: Tyler Perry Joins 'Star Trek XI'

Star Trek XII normally don't post rumors, because they usually turn out to be false, but every so often, one will pique my interest. At UGO.com, I found this one rumor particularly amusing because it links Star Trek with -- of all people -- Tyler Perry.

Back in the summer, I posted some assets for Perry's Why Did I Get Married? and not only did a few Doomers asked me why in hell I would do such a thing, but I really wondered to myself, Why the hell am I doing this? To my defense, I thought it was a comedy at first, and as as it turned out, we received lots of hits on those posts and positive reader feedback. PEOPLE LIKE PERRY...continue reading this article at Geeks of Doom!

The Hellraiser Project: Hellraiser VIII: Hellworld

Hellraiser VIII: Hellworld DVDIt's over! Oh, dear sweet Jesus, it's finally over! And not surprisingly, it's a clean sweep. I'd feel better about there not being another Hellraiser movie to watch, if I didn't have to watch Hellraiser: Hellworld to be able to say that. This is the worst of the lot. I know I say that with all of them, but that's only because they each have gotten progressively worse since the fifth one. This just goes to show that when you're in prison, the burly inmates fuck you the hardest the night before you're paroled...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

'Indiana Jones' and the Land of the Links

The Complete Making of Indiana JonesI have been on an Indiana Jones high ever since Christmas when Dave3 gave me The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones, Volume One - The Early Years. Well, if you ask my Dad, he'll say I've been on an Indy high since he took me to see Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, so I'll say on a super-high since Christmas.

Just yesterday, UK Doomer Dizzy Alien and I were talking about how beyond stoked we both are for the fourth film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Diz wanted to call dibs on the movie review, which I totally understand, her being such a great fan of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas (as am I). But as it turns out, I've had hypothetical, theoretical, and actual dibs on the review since the first moment of any hint of a fourth movie was rumored...continue reading this article at Geeks of Doom!

Movie Review: National Treasure: Book of Secrets

National Treasure: Book of SecretsNational Treasure: Book of Secrets
Directed by Jon Turteltaub
Starring Nicolas Cage, Justin Bartha, Diane Kruger, Jon Voight, Helen Mirren
Rated PG
Release date: Dec. 21, 2007

National Treasure was that one movie that everyone hated to admit that they liked. Anytime that I would bring it up, someone would attempt to shank me just because I liked it, but you could tell it in their eyes that they liked it too. For a movie that was about finding treasure other than the boogers in your nostrils, it was pretty good. It wasn’t an Academy Award-winning movie, but it was a fun popcorn flick. I mean, SOMEONE else had to like it, because it made $173 million in the United States alone, and I know it just wasn’t me that paid into it...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

The Dark KnightThe official Web site for The Dark Knight has been updated to include a video page.

As of now, the video page contains a "Why So Serious?" poster, which you can see here at right (click for large view). There's also links to videos that apparently don't exist, because clicking on the links yields error messages. If you click on the links to the Windows Media files, the URL name has "trailer 2" in it (the QuickTime links have "TRL2" in their file names). What we've got here is a tough little nut to crack, at least from my viewpoint. Behind the curtain time; sometimes it's hard to review things that come across my proverbial desk. Some books you read, and it's easy to say “This is good” or “This is bad.” Not so much with this one. There's some serious subject matter going on here and a very unique art style, which brings up some good points and some bad points. I'll get to that in a minute...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Bender's Big ScoreFuturama: Bender's Big Score
Directed by Dwayne Carey-Hill
Starring Billy West, John DiMaggio, Katey Sagal

Release date: Nov. 27, 2007

The domination of the DVD allows cancelled television series to find new life on silvery discs. DVDs also escalated the shameless pandering to fans with feature-length renditions of their favorite cancelled faire. Sure, the fan bases of said franchises weren't strong enough to keep the show on the air, but that doesn't mean their money is no good. DVD Review: The Kingdom

The Kingdom DVDThe Kingdom
Directed by Peter Berg
Starring Jamie Foxx, Chris Cooper, Jennifer Garner
Universal Studios Home Entertainment
Available Dec. 23, 2007

The Kingdom is this year’s Miami Vice. What does that mean, you ask? Well, one, only the smartest people and the ones who pay close attention will REALLY know what’s going on. Secondly, it’s really pretty. And third, Michael Mann is the producer. I’m not one to criticize Mann unless the movie is Ali and Manhunter. I don’t even like Heat as much as most. But I will admit that when Mann wants to have fun, he does have fun. Unlike that other Michael skid-mark that thinks that robots sticking their fists up each other’s corn-shooters would be “fun,” Michael Mann and director Peter Berg shoot a film that is divided into two-halves -- the first being a crime scene and the second being a nonstop action-thriller...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

'Semi-Pro' Trailers

Semi-ProAn age-restricted trailer for New Line Cinema's upcoming comedy Semi-Pro is now online at the movie's official site.

To gain access to the R-rated trailer, you'll have to enter your full name, date of birth, and zip code. If you can get in, I highly recommend you watch it, since it's funny as hell. While the all-ages trailer allows you to get a feel for the movie (watch it here after the jump), it definitely suffers from flat-joke syndrome much like all those censored Superbad clips...continue reading this article at Geeks of Doom!

"My constituents know they're not electing a constipated monk." -- Charlie Wilson

"These things happened. They were glorious and they changed the world. And the people who deserved the credit are the ones who made the sacrifice. And then we fucked up the endgame." -- Charlie Wilson

Charlie Wilson's War: Good Times before the Blowback

Charlie Wilson's War eradicated the sour taste in my mouth left by such dry polemics as Rendition and Lions For Lambs. Watching these films, the filmmakers' heart is in the right place, but the execution was bland and off putting. I even found the films to be insulting at times. The real-life story of Texas Congressman, Charlie Wilson, and his involvement in the largest CIA covert operation is anything but dry. Thanks to Mike Nichols' effortless direction and Aaron Sorkin's witty screenplay based on the late George Crile's book of the same name, the film never goes off the rails into misguided pandering...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

The inner geek in me is always entertained by a good old-fashioned sword and sorcery tale, and this little book here really scratched that itch. And when I say little, I mean that literally, as the physical dimension of this book really sets it apart from any other comic you’ll normally see. The book is basically the size of a postcard, 56 pages long, and mostly wordless. You won’t read a book quite like it this year. DVD Review: The Munsters' Scary Little Christmas

The Munsters' Scary Little Christmas DVDThe Munsters' Scary Little Christmas
Directed Ian Emes
Starring Sandy Baron, Elaine Hendrix, Ann Magnuson, Sam McMurray, Bug Hall, Mary Woronov
Universal Studios Home Entertainment

Newer generations of children unfamiliar with the classic 1960s black-and-white TV show The Munsters will get a kick out of this full-color 1996 made-for-TV movie. The Munsters' Scary Little Christmas continues the saga of the lovably morbid, yet naive Munsters, a middle-class family made up of classic monster stereotypes just trying to fit in with their neighbors.

In this humorous spooky holiday offering, The Munsters family is spending Christmas in Los Angeles, much to young Eddie's dismay. To cheer him up, bumbling dad Herman makes an effort to get Eddie the best toy of the season, cousin Marilyn plans for the Transylvanian relatives to come in for the holiday, and Grandpa uses his powers of magic and alchemy to make it snow ... and accidentally transports Santa and his elves to Los Angeles. Meanwhile, mom Lily enters the home owner association's holiday decorations competition, threatening to dethrone the usual winner, uppity neighbor Mrs. Dimwitty (played by Mary Woronov, who I've loved since seeing her as Principal Evelyn Togar in Rock and Roll High School)...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

DVD Review: 'The McCartney Years'

The McCartney Years DVDThe McCartney Years
3-DVD set
Rhino Entertainment

The recently released 3-DVD package The McCartney Years is an ambitiously expansive collection of music videos and concert footage from Paul McCartney’s post-Beatles career. The first two discs are comprised of videos/promo clips of more than 40 songs, including most of the big hits (“Band on the Run,” “Silly Love Songs”), but even more appealingly, many lesser-known pop gems (“Off the Ground,” “Hope of Deliverance”) that didn’t make their way into the classic rock canon because of a change in popular music tastes. McCartney’s knack for primarily guitar-driven, melodic rock doesn’t quite burn up the Billboard charts the way it did in the 1960s and ‘70s...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!
