Every fifteen years or so, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in an act of populist penance, gives Best Picture to a film that everyone likes and is just flat-out entertaining, and has no room for the mugging for Oscars they eventually got. These films include nifty little genre pieces like Casablanca, The French Connection, and The Silence of the Lambs. The last time a movie that everyone got behind for Best Picture that didn't have lavish costumes or fake English accents was… Actually it was last year. The Departed won, and I'm still in shock. Details of 'Atonement' Long Tracking Shot

Back in September when I first received assets for Atonement, I'll admit, at first glance I thought it was a typical period-piece tragic love story. I figured there's a war and lovers are kept apart by it (you can't blame me, the first images were of Keira Knightley in a war-time nurse's uniform and James McAvoy in Army gear!). And while I don't necessarily have a problem with this genre, I just figured Atonement was average fare, nothing to really take notice of.
