Game Review: Contra 4

Contra 4 20th Anniversary Edition for Nintendo DSContra 4
20th Anniversary Edition
Nintendo DS

Contra’s back and old-school video game lovers can now rejoice for having a decent update to a much loved series. Contra had fallen on hard times for a while, suffering through a slew of misguided attempts to update the series which failed to improve on the tried and true game play of the original. This game is a continuation of the story and game play from Contra 3 and it’s safe to say that this version will appeal to fans of the original game. Of course that means one other thing that may turn off more casual gamers -- this game is tough...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Jimmy and Lester soon become friends, and the pair of them set off on superhero adventures fighting an alien invasion and picking up games of hockey on a frozen pond. Inside the Actor's Studio: The Depth of Depp

Over the years, Johnny Depp and I have enjoyed a healthy, long-term, committed relationship. And by 'healthy', 'long term,' and 'committed', I of course mean 'unhealthy', 'obsessive,' and 'stalkee-stalker' respectively. My admiration for the man goes beyond the realms of sanity.

Currently, his movies occupy the 4th, 9th, 13th, and 25th positions on my Top 50 List. His creative processes, personal philosophies, and overall outlook have all been a source of inspiration to me personally.

It is fitting, then, that my first review published by someone other than myself is James Lipton's quest to lead us all into the psyche of the Teen-Idol turned Hollywood Rebel turned Acting Legend that is Johnny Depp...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Weekly Comic Book Pulls for 11-21-07

Weekly Comic Book PullsPowers #27
Wow, Bendis and Oeming have done a great job the last few months getting this book back on track, both in making sure it comes out on time, but also bringing the story back to it’s former greatness. This issue has a great speech from the police captain, as well as some really interesting scenes with Deena, and two parts with some old favorite characters. What I really enjoyed about this issue was the way it tied back into the very first arc of the series. This title is officially back to being one of the best on the stands. ---5 out of 5

Movie Review: Enchanted

EnchantedEnchanted (2007)
Directed by Kevin Lima
Starring Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, Susan Sarandon
Songs by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz
Music by Alan Menken
Rated PG
Walt Disney Pictures

Enchanted serves up all things classic Disney: a storybook fairy tale about a naive young girl, her helpful forest friends, the brave young prince that comes to find her, and an evil witch turned crone who's out to get her. There's singing, and magic, and falling in love. And it's rendered in 2D hand-drawn animation ... for the first 10 minutes or so.

In the fairy tale land of Andalasia, helpful forest creatures gather around the beautiful young Giselle, who sings her days away awaiting the arrival of her one true love. One day, while battling a troll, the brave and handsome Prince Edward hears the sound of a beautiful singing voice, which leads him to Giselle's home. The two fall instantly in love and plan to marry the following day. When bride-to-be Giselle arrives at the castle the next day, she's stopped by the prince's wicked stepmother Queen Narissa, disguised as an old hag. Giselle naively follows the hag, who leads her to then pushes her down a magic well to a place where there are no "happily ever afters."...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

“Music is the only thing that makes sense anymore... play it loud enough and it keeps the demons at bay.” -- Martin Luther, Across the Universe

“I like these calm little moments before the storm. It reminds me of Beethoven. Can you hear it? It's like when you put your head to the grass and you can hear the growin' and you can hear the insects. Do you like Beethoven?” -- Gary Oldman, Leon

I remember the first time I was obsessed with music. Back in 2000, the one artist that I always wanted to be like was Eminem. Back then, I thought he was an amazing musician. I didn’t know what the hell he was talking about in his songs, but it didn’t matter. His rap songs had some funky beats and made my head bounce the entire time I was listening to it. “The Real Slim Shady” was played so many times in my cassette player that I still know the lyrics right now. I know how I talk about how rap sucks nowadays, but if there was one man who is one of the best rappers out there, it’s Eminem...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

And now we come to the end of Top Cow’s big summer event, or big fall event such as it is. Much like the first two issues of this mini, it does a decent job, and has some very nice artwork, but is basically unspectacular and kind of lost on me. This has been an event for fans of the Witchblade and Darkness properties, and is not a bad jumping on point, but could definitely have been done better.

Sara Pezzini, the former Witchblade, has her pregnancy come to full term in this issue. Meanwhile Jackie Estacado, the wielder of the Darkness, is forced to protect his baby’s mama from the forces of the Angelus. Johnny Cash was one of those rare figures in American music that was loved by most everyone. Country music fans, counterculturalists, the establishment, and lovers of traditional gospel music all found plenty of reasons to like the Man In Black.

After his television show went off the air, he still was in high demand, so CBS contracted with him for two hour-long Christmas variety specials in 1976 and 1977. And now, they are available on DVD.

The 1976 show is more "down-home" featuring sing alongs with the friends and family in the Cash home. It also features Roy Clark, Merle Travis, The Carter Family, Barbara Mandrell, Billy Graham, and …Tony Orlando!...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Geeks Of Doom sent an email to the staff about movie screeners. The items on the list were about aliens, SpongeBob, and a little movie called Guy X that caught my eye, all because of one little name. His name is one name that I know very well. I stuck by him when he stuck his crank in a pie, and I cheered him on in that Freddie Prinze, Jr. bullshit called Boys and Girls. When I was a kid, there were so many spy shows on network TV, that prime time looked like a propaganda project for the Department Of Defense.

On any given night you could watch British spies (The Avengers ran on American TV from 1966-69 and Secret Agent, also called Danger Man, from 1964-66); cowboy spies (The Wild Wild West, 1965-69; cool-talking, tennis-playing spies (I Spy, 1965-68); spy teams (Mission: Impossible, 1966-73); funny spies (Get Smart, 1965-70), and even monkey spies (Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp 1970-72). Movie Review: The Mist

The Mist movie posterThe Mist (2007)

Written by Frank Darabont
Original Story by Stephen King
Starring Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Laurie Holden, Nathan Gamble
Darkwoods Productions
Dimension Films

Frank Darbont has one massive feather in his cap. He adapted a Stephen King novella into one of the greatest films of all time -- The Shawshank Redemption. An avid fan of King, he went on to adapt The Green Mile, which was not as warmly welcomed, but had an admittedly tough act to follow. So for the duo’s third collaboration, The Mist, there was reason to approach with reserved enthusiasm. Ultimately, the film stays true to nearly every aspect of the book. However, the sparing moments when it strays are so vital to the overall picture that it becomes simultaneously entertaining and disappointing.

The Mist was originally an audiobook experiment, designed to immerse the listener in the story through “3-D Sound” long before surround sound was invented. Despite being over twenty years old, the story’s message remains as potent as ever and has a simple plot that is easily modernized...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Ironside Season 2 DVD
Ironside

Starring Raymond Burr, Barbara Anderson
Shout! Factory
Available Now; $44.99

When Perry Mason ended, Raymond Burr was amongst the most popular television actors. It wasn’t long until they found another vehicle for Burr, and Ironside was that vehicle. On the surface, the premise was pretty implausible. Ironside, the Chief of Detectives in San Francisco, was paralyzed by an assassin’s bullet and was confined to a wheelchair. Did that stop him from fighting crime? Heck, no. He assembled a crack team, featuring a beautiful policewoman, an ex-con who was studying law, and a straight-laced detective sergeant. He also rode around in a modified paddy wagon so he could travel to the crime scenes and question the bad guys. Like Perry Mason, he knew the answers even before he asked the questions. And he ate -- he ate a lot! (No kidding, in every episode Burr chowed down once or twice)...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Ahhh, Sienkiewicz.

Just saying the name out loud, it... well, it makes me scratch my head and google the damn thing because I’ve never really known how to pronounce it.

Bill Sienkiewicz (that’s “sin-KEV-itch” for the google-impaired) is a legend within the comics medium. His work on Marvel’s New Mutants in the early ’80s, followed by his groundbreaking work on Elektra: Assassin has pretty much cemented him in the comic book art hall of fame (should such a thing ever exist) as one of the most influential talents of our lifetime. Echoes of his moody, often chaotic art style can be found in the works of artists like Mark Texiera, Ashley Wood, and even Australian superstar Ben Templesmith. However, I was sent this book and after reading it, I’m left scratching my head a bit. There are several different questions to ask myself while reviewing this: does it work as an adaptation of a novel? Does it work as an explanation of Libertarian ideas and philosophies? Does it work as a piece of fiction on its own? Is it exciting? Does it have interesting characters? Does it have anything to say? I guess those last ones are questions I ask when reviewing anything, but they come up more in relation to the first two questions. I have answers to all those questions, but first, plot synopsis, ho!!...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Weekly Comic Book Pulls for 11-14-07

Weekly Comic Book PullsPreview: Left on Mission #5
(On-sale: 11/21/07) -- Coming to you from BOOM! Studios, we get the final issue of this remarkably good spy story. Although I guess with this issue, I’d have to describe it as half spy story, half noir. Things come to a messy end and not everyone comes out alive as series lead Eric has a reunion with his femme fatal Emma, as she explains what she’s done. Writer Chip Mosher does a good job making the reader understand what the characters are going though, and paces the story perfectly. The ending becomes very emotional without being melodramatic. Artist Fancesco Francavilla’s work reminds one of Michael Lark or Alex Maleev, with very realistic renditions of the locales, and a good handle on the characters. This has been a very enjoyable story, and if you missed the first four issues, definitely be on the look out for the trade when it comes out. ---4 out of 5

Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales wants to be the ultimate Ragnarok And Roll film. Southland Tales wants to be the It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World of Apocalyptic cinema.

The film’s huge ensemble cast and the maddening climax scream out Charles K. Feldman’s 1967 Casino Royale at times. Richard Kelly’s ambition and enthusiasm cannot be denied. Southland Tales was initially going to be a nine-part interactive experience -- it was narrowed down to six parts. There is so much going on that there is the Southland Tales: The Prequel Saga graphic novel that has the first three chapters. Movie Review: Beowulf

Beowulf movie posterBeowulf
Directed by Robert Zemeckis
Starring Ray Winstone, Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins, Robin Wright Penn
Rated PG-13

Before the dissection begins, allow me to give you my overall generic gut-instinct first-impression sentiment: Beowulf is an amazing movie that's visually stunning and highly engrossing; I totally recommend it, especially in IMAX 3D. I preface my review with this simple statement because no matter what else I say about the movie in the next 800 or so words, I know damn well that when Beowulf comes out on DVD, I'm going to own it and when Beowulf airs on cable television, I'll watch it every time it's on just because it's on ... because it's entertaining.

But Beowulf is no ordinary film. It's controversial not for its violence and nudity or any artistic liberties taken in translating the sixth-century Old English poem onto the big screen. Nope, it's causing a stir because it's an animated movie that refuses to accept that its an animated movie, therefore, the audience can't accept it either...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!
