Movie Review: Sunshine

Sunshine"It's people. Soylent Green is made out of people. They're making our food out of people. Next thing they'll be breeding us like cattle for food. You've gotta tell them. You've gotta tell them!" -- Detective Robert Thorn from Soylent Green

"They don't know what they've got there." -- Dr. Indiana Jones from Raiders of the Lost Ark

"Look how they massacred my boy. " -- Don Vito Corleone from The Godfather

I go in with the highest of hopes and sometimes I come out in ruins. The promise of suburban bliss slashed by studio MBA greed mixed with misunderstood Louis B. Mayer wisdom. For Danny Boyle's Sunshine, I am not going down like that. Not in this lifetime, no way. Children of Men and The Fountain got lost in the shuffle. I championed those films very hard. True, they left a lasting an impact on me. Films not for everyone, but I felt like they were for me. Let me say this, if Danny Boyle and Alex Garland want to continue exploring the science fiction genre, they have my blessing. Like Darren Aronofsky, I would gladly see to it they would always get the financing for their visions...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

CrysisCrysis - PC
(Partial gameplay Trailer)

A new trailer focusing on the 'nanosuit' abilities of the player with a bit of cgi thrown in. Ignoring that the graphics are looking top notch. Although this gamer worries about the gameplay, it doesn't look like this one is going to reinvent the wheel. One to watch though.

TV Review: ‘The Universe’ — Mercury & Venus: The Inner Planets

The Universe - VenusThe History Channel gives us a two-for-one special in this episode of The Universe, as we take a look at the first two planets orbiting the Sun -- Mercury And Venus: The Inner Planets. The episode is broken down into two parts and takes a look at the more interesting planet Venus, Earth's "sister" planet, first and is followed by a slightly rushed look at Mercury. As both planets are solid, unlike the gaseous outer planets, the episode and the scientists interviewed are able to talk about the similarities and differences of these inner planets to Earth, and how by studying these two planets has helped to answer questions about our own planet...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

'Halloween,' Whiney Horror Fans, and Seamus Heaney

HalloweenNOTE: This was originally going to be a straight review of John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN. Sitting at the keyboard, it just kinda turned into this.

I don't mind that Rob Zombie's remaking Halloween. Really, I don't. My reasons are simple. Take into account that in 1999, Irish author Seamus Heaney had a worldwide international bestseller that was a shock to everyone. Why was it so surprising this book sold an assload of copies?

Because it was a translation of Beowulf, the epic poem that we all had to read in High School English and is widely known to be the oldest story in the history of the English language. I say this to ask a question...continue reading this article at Geeks of Doom!

Weekly Comic Book Pulls for 8-22-07

Green Lantern Corps #15
I am really enjoying the Sinestro War story line going on between Green Lantern and this book. It’s high octane action with some great character moments. This particular issue is basically the Battle of Helm’s Deep in space. The Sinestro Corps have come to the Green Lantern planet of Mogo, who is not only a source of great morale for the GL’s, but apparently is the being responsible for find new ring bearers when the old ones die. So, it’s pretty important to the GL’s to protect him, and it’s important for the SC to destroy him. This is big epic action though, planets literally collide. It’s also nice that you can read this and add another layer to the story going on in Green Lantern, or you can ignore it and not miss anything. As with the story, this is the way big event comics should be. Dave Gibbons handles the large cast well, as there are a ton of characters on each side, many of them with alien dialects, but it never gets confusing, and a special mention to the letterer Phil Balsman for making each characters word balloons distinctive. Patrick Gleason and Angel Unzueta split the pencil work and really bring a lot of intensity to the work. The action leaps off the page and in a story with this much going on, the story telling never makes it confusing. Get over your event fatigue and pick this book up. --4 out of 5...continue reading this article at Geeks of Doom!

Then I found out that I was going to get the complete first season on DVD for review and I immediately assigned it to someone else. But as fate would have it, the DVD arrived too late for me to send it out. So guess who got stuck watching 22 episodes of Friday Night Lights this weekend?

Keanu is Klaatu in 'Earth' Remake

Keanu Reeves will star in the planned remake of the 1951 Robert Wise-directed sci-fi classic The Day the Earth Stood Still, according to Variety.

In the Twentieth Century Fox reimaging -- slated for a late fall or early 2008 production start -- Reeves will play the role of Klaatu, a peaceful humanoid alien who comes to Earth to warn the people of their impending annihilation.

In the original black and white film, Klaatu comes to Earth during the height of the Cold War. The alien, played by Michael Rennie, lands his flying-saucer-style spaceship in the middle of Washington, D.C and tells authorities that the people of Earth have been under observation. He warns that if the Earth's leaders do not cease their violent warmongering, the Earth will be destroyed. But Pim is the only one who has seen the face of Ploy in mirrors and reflections, and Wee believes that it is merely stress which are bringing upon these hallucinations. Movie Review: Mr. Bean's Holiday

Mr. Bean's Holiday"Come on, everybody, it's gonna be great! Dr. Bean is a genius of the very highest order!" - Peter MacNicol, "Bean"

Let's start this off on the right spot: if you don't like Mr. Bean, don't fucking see this movie. Now that I got that out of the way... If you do like Mr. Bean, you should be happy. It contains jokes that are pretty much just like the original TV show. I am a self-confessed "Bean"-er (1. person who likes "Mr. Bean"; 2. a racial slur. I'm number 1). I grew up watching Mr. Bean when I was young, and I caught the first midnight showing for Bean: The Movie when I was five. Therefore, I liked Mr. Bean's Holiday. I know not too many people (er, anyone who didn't put their eight dollars in the ten million gross just for the U.S.) like "Mr. Bean," and they often call him "pain in their assholes," but for them people that do (in the U.S., of course, since most people in England pretty much call him God), good for you guys. Warren Ellis gives us his re-imagining of Marvel 80’s New Universe line of comics, and having never read those comics, I came to this fairly fresh. I have to say that it largely works, with some interesting characters, and some gorgeous art from Salvador Larroca, who along with the colorist Jason Keith creates a painted, very realistic style. Ellis uses some of his stand by story elements, but also does some different stuff with them. The biggest problem is that this is a lot of set up, and who knows when the series will be continued...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

DVD Review: Inland Empire

Inland EmpireI couldn’t possibly tell you what the film’s about, and at this point I don’t know if David Lynch could. It’s become sort of a pastime -- Laura [Dern] and I sit around on set trying to figure out what’s going on.

-Justin Theroux, co-star of Inland Empire

David Lynch has finally outweirded himself with Inland Empire, his self-financed and self-distributed experiment with digital filmmaking. It begins with a desolate sitcom featuring people in rabbit costumes and ends with a dance sequence featuring a lumberjack and a one-legged woman. In between there are shifting levels of reality, dream sequences that pretend they’re set in waking life, and vice-versa. The only thing odder than the movie is the fact that I dig it whole-heartedly. It ain’t Mulholland Drivebut, then, what the hell really is?...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

TV Review: 'The Universe' -- Life and Death of a Star

The Universe - Life and Death of a StarAlmost 30 years ago, the late astronomer Carl Sagan wrote "we are creatures of the cosmos... we are star stuff." This is not merely a bit of poetic license. The death throes of large stars are the workshops where the heavier elements (e.g., carbon and iron) that make up our bodies were once made. There is nothing in us, except possibly a few hydrogen atoms in the water in our tissues, that was not once in a star. Mr. Sagan eloquently captured this idea once and for all with his memorable turn of phrase.

This is also one of the core ideas visited by the Life and Death of a Star, episode 10 of the 13-part series The Universe on The History Channel. During this fairly fascinating hour of television, we learn about the biology of stars -- how they are born, live, and die. And make no mistake: stars live very interesting lives...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Game Review: The Darkness

The DarknessSwedish developer Starbreeze apparently enjoys a challenge. In a time when the market is saturated with crappy games based on big franchises from other media (primarily film and comic books), Starbreeze takes smaller licensed properties and makes them better than their source material. Ultimate Spider-Man #112

The big story with this issue is of course the change in artists. Stuart Immonen takes over with this issue, and I hope he stays around for a long time. His art is different from Bagley’s, that’s no doubt, but it keeps the same level of excitement and action. As with Bagley, Immonen does a good job of making the teenagers look like teenagers and not short adults. The story deals with another return of Norman Osborne as he makes his escape. The bulk of the story deals with continuing the Peter-Mary Jane-Kitty triangle as they get entangled with that most classic of sitcom situations, the take care of a baby assignment. (Which does anyone actually do, or is this something that just happens to T.V. characters?) It’s a cliché, but Bendis makes it work for him, as his characters always ring true. The change of art is not as jarring with Bendis behind the typewriter, as the characters voices haven’t changed, just the way they look. This issue is as good as the series always is...continue reading Henchman21's pulls at Geeks of Doom!

Comic Review: X-Men: Supernovas

X-Men SupernovasX-Men: Supernovas
Writer: Mike Carey
Artists: Chris Bachalo, Humberto Ramos, Clayton Henry, and Mark Brooks
Marvel Comics

This is part 2 of my delving back into the X-Men universe, and I have to say I didn’t like it quite as much as Ed Brubaker’s epic, but it’s still fairly decent. It tells a different kind of X-Men story, more spandex and super-villains than space adventure, and does itself credit by following a different trail than Uncanny X-Men. Mike Carey is telling a more conventional X-Men story, and does a decent, but not great job.

This book has the first three story arcs of Carey’s run (issues 188-199), along with this year's X-men annual. The first arc deals with the team coming together and dealing with the Children of the Vault. They’re kind of a mix of Grant Morrison’s Weapon X concept and Chris Claremont’s Neo concept, basically humans who have been in a time compression chamber and have advanced weaponry and technology, and possibly some powers. I don’t know, as it’s not terribly well explained. They’re fairly generic stock villains, and they don’t leave much of an impression. The story brings the team of Rogue, Iceman, Cannonball, Cable, an Omega Sentinel, Mystique, Lady Mastermind, and Sabertooth together in an organic way and it creates a nice dynamic with the heroes not really trusting the villains. It also sets up a few subplots that are revisited in later stories...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

DVD Review: House M.D. Season 3

House M.D.There's only one reason to buy House, M.D. - Season Three on DVD -- it’s one of the finest shows on television right now.

The show centers around Dr. Gregory House, played wonderfully by Hugh Laurie, a brilliant infectious disease specialist with a not-so-great bedside manner. Dr. House, who leads a team of young doctors at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital, typically uses unconventional methods to solve the most allusive of medical mysteries.

Watching Season Three, which included guest appearances by Kathleen Quinlan, Joel Grey, John Larroquette, Charles S. Dutton, and Dave Matthews, left me wanting Season Four to start right away. It is an emotional rollercoaster for the characters and the audience. All of the storylines are interesting and fantastically written. Hugh Laurie is phenomenal as Dr. House. The supporting cast -- Lisa Edelstein, Robert Sean Leonard, Jennifer Morrison, Omar Epps, and Jesse Spencer -- has made me cry at some point in every episode. House deserves every Emmy and Golden Globe nomination and win...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Approbation Comics
Cover Price $3.50; Available Now

Writer and CEO of Approbation Comics Bart A. Thompson returns for a second go-around of short anthology horror stories with a different artist penciling each story. This time around, Thompson strays a bit from the Tales From The Crypt dark-humored twists, and though each story retains a "gotcha" ending, his artists decide to all but abandoned any thematic linking the EC Comics art style.

In "Identity," a young man awakens in an alley, unaware of who he is and why he is beat up, but senses that there is someone after him. As he makes his way out of the alleyways, he comes across an equally beaten young woman, who is shaken by whoever attacked her. The amnesiac takes the woman, practically by force, back to a familiar building to both defend her and protect himself. But as he makes his way through the building, fragmented memories begin to needle him in the back of his mind. Movie Review: The Invasion

The InvasionThe Invasion is about an intelligent alien bacteria that modifies the essential nature of humanity without changing its physical nature. The Invasion attempts to teach us something about our essential nature but instead teaches us about our nature to be suckered into a dull movie.

Spike 'Murder's Reality TV

Spike TV just turned up the reality television dial about 50 clicks. Their new show Murder takes six real people, divides them into two teams, and tasks them to solve a 'real' murder case in 48 hours, CSI style.

Murder is hosted by Detective Tommy Le Noir, a 27-year Arlington, Texas, decorated law enforcement veteran who garnered his fair share of murder convictions. Each show starts with Le Noir escorting the two teams into an exact replica crime scene pulled from the files of a solved homicide case. These gruesomely recreated crime scenes come complete with the murder victim's corpse, which looks like it came straight from Tom Savini's closet. They're given actual crime scene footage from the closed case, a list of potential suspects, an opportunity to analyze orginal suspect interrogation tapes, and then they get to sit in on a recreated autopsy with a real pathologist who reviews the findings of the original autopsy report with them...continue reading this article at Geeks of Doom!

Nature or Nurture: What Will Be Next For Star Trek?

Star Trek XIThe Star Trek franchise is in reasonable need of a reboot. One production team, headed by Rick Berman, has been responsible for all "official" Star Trek output on film and television since 1992. That team no longer has a Trek series in production and creative control of the next Trek film has been given to J.J. Abrams. To further emphasize the point, sets in use for decades on the Paramount backlot as "planet locations" have been struck. Long time Trek model and costume makers have been let go. Paramount even reached into its warehouses and auctioned off much of the memorabilia it accumulated over 40 years. The direct creative link reaching back from Berman, Leonard Nimoy, and Harve Bennett to Gene Roddenberry himself has been broken. ‘Superbad’ - The Film Maniac Perspective

SuperbadSuperbad came ten years too late.

Yes, I said it. If we had Superbad ten years ago, we wouldn’t have had a film like American Pie, and I know for a fact that Superbad made me laugh a lot more than American Pie did. What we have here is not just a funny movie, but a smart movie at that, with a lesson that packs a punch. You don’t know what you are getting yourself into while watching this movie. It’s about as raunchy as Animal House and as smart as Knocked Up.

Like American Graffiti and Dazed and Confused, Superbad takes place on a single day. Our characters are Evan, a guy so shy who never gets noticed by girls, and Seth, a fat kid that reminds me a lot of Cartman from South Park, but more perverted and more wanting for sex. Seth’s love interest, Jules, is throwing this big party that night while her parents are out of the town. Seth offers to buy beer for the party, and sets his plan in full motion. Tonight, he and Evan will get their love interests (Evan’s interest being Becca) drunk and have sex with them before leaving off to college...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

DVD Review: The Ex

The ExTom (Zach Braff) and Sofia (Amanda Peet) are expecting their first child and they've decided that Sofia -- a beautiful, successful lawyer -- will stay at home to be a full-time mom, while Tom works to support the family. The problem is, Tom is somewhat of a slacker who can't commit to one particular career, let alone hold down a job. It's not because he doesn't try, but rather because his "bullshit meter" compels him to always say what's on his mind, hence the reason he's always getting fired.

Realizing it's time to grow up and hold his tongue, Tom takes his father-in-law (Charles Grodin) up on his job offer to work at an advertising agency. So, the couple move from their tiny New York City apartment into a big house in Ohio, and Tom takes on the challenge of his new career...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Conversations with GoD: Alex Winter

Alex WinterNow I believe in the personal philosophy ‘If you don’t ask, you don’t get’, so as a shot in the dark, I thought I would contact a certain somebody. Movie Review: Superbad

SuperbadWith two weeks left until high school graduation, best friends Seth and Evan are coming to grips with the fact that they will not be going to college together, and try to devise the perfect plan to get girlfriends for the summer with the sole purpose of learning to become masters of bedroom pleasuring before they become freshmen in the Fall. A sketchy plan comes to fruition when their annoying tag-along friend/nuisance Fogell gets a fake ID the same day that one of Seth's lustful crushes asks him to come to a party she is having, and he offers to buy some booze.

That afternoon, Fogell attempts to purchase said alcohol, and when Seth and Evan think that Fogell is being arrested (though he is really just talking to two cops about a robbery), the co-dependant pair set out on epic journey into the night to score some booze in order to gain access to the party that should bring them into manhood. Meanwhile, Fogell sets out on his own fantastic adventure when he becomes a backseat companion to two of the coolest cops to ever hit the beat...continue reading this article at Geeks of Doom!

Hardware Review: Logitech Z-5500 5.1 Digital Surround Sound Speaker System

Logitech Z-5500 5I made a decision about a year ago to simplify my life and living room, and make my G5 Macintosh my "media hub." I purchased an external Miglia USB TV tuner with EyeTV DVR software, a 30" Dell monitor (most HIGHLY recommended!), and sold my home theater.

At the time I had a modest Logitech analog system, which was good, but I wanted more. For a few years the Logitech Z-5500 Digital speaker system caught my eye, but the price was just a bit too high, and I just couldn't justify the close to $400 price ticket for a second sound system. But now that this was going to be my main (and only), system, I decided to take the plunge.

I purchased the system through Dell for $278.95, and say what you want about Dell, they were the best choice when it came to this item as they had very reasonable shipping ($22.32), and this was a VERY heavy item (somewhere around 40 or more pounds). Another positive thing I found with Dell is they have a very fast delivery time.
