Party games have become all the rage since the unexpected success of the Nintendo Wii this year. Now the other console makers are scrambling to release family- and party-oriented games to capture a bit of that now lucrative market. Sony recently released their latest attempt in the genre with Buzz! The Mega Quiz. This latest in the popular European Buzz! series is the first to be released in North America. Buzz! is a trivia game that comes packaged with four special controllers. The controllers are designed to be used with one hand, with a big, red “Buzz!” button on top and a row of four smaller, colored buttons below it. The problem with this design is that thumbs (at least American thumbs, I can't speak to European digits) don't generally bend backwards, so you end up having to use both hands anyway in order to quickly access the colored buttons. One of the most intriguing parts of the second League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen series was the "New Traveller's Alamanac" stories in the back of the comics.

Not all ideas born of marketing departments are necessarily bad. This week’s release of Battlestar Galactica: Razor is a case in point. According to series creator and executive producer, Ronald D. Moore, the Universal marketing department approached him earlier this year with the idea of filming two standalone episodes that would be televised before the beginning of the final season, then immediately released on DVD, and simultaneously marketed overseas. Moore and his co-executive producer, David Eick, thought this was an intriguing idea, and asked the show's writers to take a whack at it. I’ll call this a review in two parts, as I’m not sure if it was meant to end on the cliffhanger it did, or if there was just a problem with the preview copy I got. As it stands, if the preview copy is the same as what will be released to stores, then there’s a fairly big problem. If not, I’ll post a correction. That’s just how serious I am about this business.
This issue picks up from the end of the last issue, although has a more linear story. It is Robo verses a rampaging pyramid and its expected protectors, mummies. This issue does its best to give us more information on Robo’s sidekicks, the Action Scientists. Writer Brian Clevinger does a good job giving us the basics of their personalities, there’s only one problem -- I don’t know any of their names. It’s just a little problem, but while the writer may be familiar with the characters, we readers are brand new to them. Out of the five scientists shown here, only three of them are named and only once for each of them. U2's The Joshua Tree was an epoch in American musical consciousness. But the album is such a big deal in rock history that you probably already know that ... everyone does. It's the album that contains the two songs that put the band on the mainstream map -- "With Or Without You" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." When the chance to review the remastered version came up -- with an extra CD of unreleased songs -- I jumped at it.
While I hate non-standard CD packaging because it makes storage annoying, I've got to hand it to them: it's beautiful. There's a hardcover 32-page booklet, with top-loading cardboard sleeves at the front and back for the discs, that fits into a hardcover slipcase. The printing is black and metallic gold ink on sturdy, coated matte paper that doesn't crimp or show fingerprints like most glossy CD inserts do. It's not every day that you see something new in the world of personal stereo headphones. From the lightweight over-the-ear sets that came with the first Walkman to the white earbuds distributed with the Apple iPod, real innovation has been hard to come by. The "look" of the basic product has changed radically over the last 30 years, but the actual mechanics of turning an electrical signal into sound in your ear has remained largely unchanged... until now.

Hidden Disney References in 'Enchanted'
The Kansas City Star has posted an extensive list of hidden Disney references in Disney's lasted film Enchanted. The list, which was sent to the Star by the movie studio, is a scene-by-scene breakdown of all the hidden references and [not-so-hidden] homages to earlier Disney movies and projects.
One viewing of Enchanted and you'll immediately pick up on all the typical Disney "princess" themes, as well as props used throughout like the poison apples and a lost glass slipper. Then there's the hidden references that are so fun to pick out in a film like this.
