Laughing At Tragedy --- 20 years of Comic Relief
There is very old cliche: "Laughter Is The Best Medicine."
Laughter as a cure for social ills was the mission of Comic Relief, a charity originally established in America in 1986 to help the homeless. For several years, comedians Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, and Billy Crystal hosted a live benefit performance, featuring some of the greatest comedians of several generations. Their efforts raised millions to help the needy...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Umbrella Academy #6
We start this week with the end of the first mini series of The Umbrella Academy, which is the break out book of the year. I've loved every issue of this series so far, but I have to be honest and say the final issue was bit of a misstep, albeit a tiny one. The whole thing wraps up a little too neatly for my taste, and puts the book in an interesting position in terms of where the story goes. The remnants of the team take on one of their own, with casualties on both sides, and then it wraps up in a touchy feely ending. The tone is fine and writer Gerard Way stages the action well, I just felt the ending was out of place. The art though, continues to amaze, with Gabriel Ba and colorist Dave Stewart bringing the book to life. It's going to be a long wait to the next mini, but I can't wait. Seriously, pick this book up.---4 out of 5

Movie Review: Diary of the Dead
Diary of the Dead
Directed by George A. Romero
Starring Shawn Roberts, Joshua Close, Scott Wentworth
Rated R
Release date: Feb. 15, 2008 (limited)
Zombie master George A. Romero brings the dead back to life for the fifth time with his latest film, Diary of The Dead. This film follows Night of the Living Dead (1968), Dawn of the Dead (1978), Day of the Dead (1985), and Land of the Dead (2005).
Diary of The Dead revolves around a group of college film students who are attempting to film their own horror movie. Much to their surprise, strange things start happening while they are filming and their movie quickly becomes a documentary of an unexplained phenomena taking place throughout the world. The students' motivation for filming the movie changes from GPA to their newfound obligation to inform any survivors of what is really happening. After seeing falsified news clips, the students felt that when uploaded on the Internet, their documentary would show the unexplained horror for what it really was, should normalcy ever return...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

As an addendum to my year-end review, I have to add one book that I missed until recently when I finally got the hardcover of this series. In a word, this is one of the greatest anythings (comics, movies, TV, books) released last year. This is a love letter to friendship, creativity, fathers, Cleveland, comics (both old and new), and plain old romance. Brian K Vaughan has produced a story that tugs at the heart while making the reader giddy with excitement. I will say this up front, if you haven't bought this series, do so now. It's the kind of work that needs more exposure and it greatly deserves your attention...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

I don't read a lot of autobiographical comics, mostly because a lot of time either I can't really identify with the subject, or it's just badly done and heavy handed. Personal stories can be a hard thing to pull off in any medium. Be Kind Rewind is a sweet, funny, cockle-warming movie sure to make you smile long after you’ve left the theater.
Mr. Fletcher (Danny Glover) owns the failing neighborhood VHS video store Be Kind Rewind. When he goes on a personal trip, he leaves Mike (Mos Def) in charge of his store with only one instruction, Keep Jerry Out. Jerry (Jack Black) is Mike’s friend, a lovable conspiracy nut and general attractor of destruction. We learn Fletcher’s instructions were well-founded when Jerry accidently erases all the videos in the store. In order to keep Be Kind Rewind from closing its doors, Jerry and Mike set off with a video camera and attempt to reshoot the movies that were erased...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!

Scud, the Disposable Assassin #21
The most anticipated return of the month, at least for me (no offense Alan Davis fans). After more than a decade off, (was I really in high school when the last issue came out) finally we get to see the end of the series. The only problem is, it's been too long, and while I remember the premise and creator Rob Schrab does a good job of bringing new readers up to speed, I wish I could catch up with the complete story. Schrab's art still has all the style and excitement we're used to, and fans of the series will enjoy this. The story is pretty light, and is mostly catch up, but it sets the rest of the story up and there are some good moments. If you've never read Scud before, wait a few months, and pick up the omnibus, as I plan to do anyway. That's pretty much my highest level of approval, because I hate to buy things twice, but I'll be doing it for this series. ---4 out of 5

Witchblade. A comic I had heard rumblings about.
When Geeks offered me the opportunity to review this, I jumped at the chance to review this trade paperback, because it was Numero Uno. This meant I would have some semblance of a story to start with (it's a new story, although it starts as #80; this TPB collections #80-85). It also gave me the prospect of looking into something from Top Cow...continue reading this review at Geeks of Doom!
