Winona Ryder is Spock's Mom in 'Trek XI'
Winona Ryder has joined the cast of JJ Abrams's Star Trek XI, according to Variety.
Ryder will play Amanda Grayson, Spock's human mother in the Star Trek prequel, which hits theaters Christmas Day 2008. Hack/Slash does a lot of things that many comics don’t, and the best is that it’s a book that doesn’t pander to the standard comic book rigors as far as story-telling elements. At its core, Hack/Slash follows Cassie Hack and her friend, Vlad, as they hunt Slashers, basically people/things that run around murdering people -- your basic horror film antagonists generally suffice. It’s true! One of those ancient facts of life. Richard Donner understood it when he filmed Mel Gibson taking a walk in Lethal Weapon, McG understood it when he directed Cameron Diaz’s surfing scene in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, and Joel Schumacher most DEFINITELY understood it when he showed Val Kilmer, George Clooney, and Chris O'Donnell suiting up in Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. They all understood that, sometimes, y’just gotta show a little ass.
Well, it seems the creators of Witchblade Takeru Manga have upgraded that old saw from “Ancient Wisdom” to “Prime-effing-Directive.” Through the course of issue #9 of the American-translated manga series, we are treated to a total of 13 bare-ass shots, 11 of which feature the heroine, Takeru, in her free-swinging, imagination-defying Witchblade uniform (or, as I like to call it, “The Scab From Hell” ...have these jokes been made already...?). Who can say no to a comic starring an 80-year-old robot fighting a group of theoretical giant atomic ants? Not me for sure. I’ve been looking forward to this series for a while, as I’m a huge fan of Brian Clevinger’s web comic 8-bit Theater, but I was a little let down by the first issue, reviewed here. There were a few pacing issues and the humor wasn’t what I was hoping for, but I chalked it up to the two being new to the whole monthly comic game. To watch Ratatouille is not merely to love it. To watch it is actually almost closer to getting high off of it. It buzzes along at a fast pace on such a level of giddy invention and superior craftsmanship that it rubs off on you. Meticulous skill and an almost slavish will to entertain without pandering are not mutually exclusive, but seeing this movie you wonder why they aren’t in the same place at the same time more often. And this has left me on the underside of hyperbole, so I’ll do my best to restrain myself. Weekly Comic Book Pulls for 10-31-07
It sure doesn’t feel like this series is coming to a close next issue. This issue brings to light the bad pacing of this series, as the early issues moved too slow and introduced nothing, and now the last few issues are racing to the end. It doesn’t help that there were twelve billions characters running around before the old version of the Squadron Supreme showed up. There’s just not enough time for everything that’s going on. Greg Horn's art is still what it is though, and if you can get over the stiffness of it, it’s enjoyable enough. I have to say that what should have been a big fun action story has collapsed under its own weight. ---2 out of 5...come see what else Henchman21 has been reading at GEEKS OF DOOM!
