I gave the ending of the last issue a bit of a hard time, since the issue just kind of stopped without any indication it was the end. Well, it's okay, because the story continues here, before going into another flashback. I was kind of worried about this series after the last issue, but with issue number four, it's rocketed right back into my heart, with probably my favorite issue so far. I think I enjoyed it so much because it lived up to my expectation of what I thought the series was going to be, as opposed to what the first three issues actually were. I’ll call this a review in two parts, as I’m not sure if it was meant to end on the cliffhanger it did, or if there was just a problem with the preview copy I got. As it stands, if the preview copy is the same as what will be released to stores, then there’s a fairly big problem. If not, I’ll post a correction. That’s just how serious I am about this business.

This issue picks up from the end of the last issue, although has a more linear story. It is Robo verses a rampaging pyramid and its expected protectors, mummies. This issue does its best to give us more information on Robo’s sidekicks, the Action Scientists. Writer Brian Clevinger does a good job giving us the basics of their personalities, there’s only one problem -- I don’t know any of their names. It’s just a little problem, but while the writer may be familiar with the characters, we readers are brand new to them. Out of the five scientists shown here, only three of them are named and only once for each of them. Who can say no to a comic starring an 80-year-old robot fighting a group of theoretical giant atomic ants? Not me for sure. I’ve been looking forward to this series for a while, as I’m a huge fan of Brian Clevinger’s web comic 8-bit Theater, but I was a little let down by the first issue, reviewed here. There were a few pacing issues and the humor wasn’t what I was hoping for, but I chalked it up to the two being new to the whole monthly comic game. Weekly Comic Book Pulls for 10-10-07

Atomic Robo #1
This is one book I’ve really been looking forward to, as I’m a big fan of writer Brian Clevinger’s webcomic “8-bit Theater.” The series is about a robot created by Nikola Tesla in 1923, which goes on to have a series of adventures across time. This issue, he fights a German scientist who is performing illegal experiments. I have to say though that it didn’t really work for me. There are some good ideas here, but a lot of the humor fell flat. There’s also some storytelling issues as there are a number of panels that are unnecessary and break the pacing of the story. The art looks very good though. Artist Scott Wegener has a style that’s one part Mike Avon Oeming and one part Mike Mignola. I really enjoyed the look of the book and the designs for the characters, but again there’s just a bit of work to be done on the storytelling. As this is the first comic work I’ve seen from both of them, I’ll continue to pick up the series, but I’d like to see a bit of improvement. ---2 out of 5...come see what else Henchman21 has been reading at GEEKS OF DOOM!
