DVD Review: Heroes S1

If you couldn’t tell, one of my favorite subgenres of the action genre is the superhero. The superhero has something that no other kind of subgenre has -- these guys have to stay away from all the fame and glory. There is a lot more going on in a superhero movie than most action movies, and because of that, it becomes a much more difficult challenge. That is why I defend most superhero films. Batman Forever, Ghost Rider, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, The Hulk, and The Punisher just go to show you a few comic book movies that I love. A year ago came an extraordinary television show, one that doesn’t only show us the difficulties of being a superhero, but the difficulties of hiding that you are a superhero. I remember watching the pilot episode of Heroes back when it aired for the first time in September of 2006, and just at the end of the episode, I knew that this show would be the next favorite show of mine. Because since Lost got weirder, My Name is Earl got stupider, and a lot more people wouldn’t leave this third season of The Office alone, I took refuge at Heroes. Film Maniac's Fall 2007 Film Picks

Ah, it’s that time of year again. Every year, there is that one season where things start to look up. This time of year is all about the awards. Voters for the Academy, Golden Globes, and MTV will be looking at all of these films that are released this year, and they will keep the films released around this time in mind.

Will this year be better than last year? Last year, we had Scorsese, Nolan, Cuaron, del Toro, Frears, Condon, Eastwood, Inarritu, Almodovar, Gibson, Zwick, Soderbergh, Field, and De Palma. This year, our line-up includes Taymor, Cronenberg, Lee, PTA, the Coen brothers, Baumbach, Scott, Farrelly brothers, Haggis, Mangold, Jordan, Penn, Anderson, and Forster. You decide which year is better.

But I’m looking forward to a few particular films. Whether it has Jack Black in it, or an Ian Curtis lookalike, they are all going to be checked out in theaters if they are playing near me. If not, they will be on DVD. This is Part I of my two-part series "The Rest of 2007 Movies -- The Good, The Bad, and the Very F**king Ugly." DVD Review: Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters

A movie made for (and presumably by) Cheeto-eating stoners has no reason to have such a convoluted and intrusive and overbearing plot. I finally pick something up that I WANT to be meandering and pointless and Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters actually manages to fuck THAT up with some ridiculousness about an exercise machine that has the power to destroy the universe. This actually wouldn’t be so bad if it were just some goofy thing to hang gags on. But what kills this movie is the assumption that we actually care. We don’t. Directors Matt Maiellaro and Dave Willis have gotten by HOW LONG on the Cartoon Network with random bullshit and fart jokes? 'Death Proof' Unrated Extended DVD + Photos

An unrated and extended version of Death Proof, the Quentin Tarantino-directed portion of theatrical double feature Grindhouse, will be released as a 2-disc DVD on September 18, 2007, by Genius Products and The Weinstein Company.

'The Nines' Audio Commentary

Now this is cool.

John August has recorded and posted a downloadable audio commentary for The Nines, the screenwriter's directorial debut in theaters now starring Ryan Reynolds, Melissa McCarthy, Hope Davis, and Elle Fanning.

The audio commentary, which also features star Ryan Reynolds, was created to be downloaded into portable media players and listened to while watching the film in the theater (as opposed to waiting for this feature until the DVD release). The commentary will give the audience a chance to learn more about the creation of the complex story and gain insight into the film’s secrets.
